Probiotics for Hormone Health

Pobiotics are beneficial bacteria that live in the body. The word probiotic means “for life.” We have beneficial bacteria in our body naturally, but antibiotics, chlorinated water, over the counter prescription medications, poor diet, stress and poor gut motility - all deplete these essential microbes.

Consuming probiotic supplements can help support a healthy microbiota. While probiotics are transient, they modulate the immune system and benefit our natural microbiota while in transit.

Studies suggest supplementing with probiotics may help women:

Modulate hormones

Control levels of circulating estrogen

Improve insulin sensitivity

Reduce androgens

Lower inflammation

Improve mood

Manage weight

Did you know that there are different types of probiotics and that they have different actions and benefits? If you have hormone issues, here are some probiotics for hormone wellness.

Lactobacillus gasseri: Shown to suppress growth of endometriosis lesions. Bifidobacterium lactis and Lactobacillus reuteri: One study showed dysbiosis of gut microbiota was associated with the pathogenesis of PCOS. This species has shown some positive outcomes with PCOS.

Lactobacillus rhamnosus and Lactobacillus reuteri: Shown to have positive outcomes on vaginal health especially in women menopausal women. Lactobacillus casei or plantarum: May be useful when there is hormone imbalance with immune issues.

Probiotic foods: Shown to support healthy estrogen levels.

A broad-spectrum lactobacillus-based probiotic is what most experts suggest for hormone health. Look for formulas that contain the probiotic types you may benefit from. You do get what you pay for when it comes to probiotics, so purchase a high-quality product. I do not recommend buying from stores online or from individuals online that store their products in hot warehouses and garages as heat damages probiotics.
