SEBACEOUS FILAMENTS VS. BLACKHEADS

The black dots on your nose may not be blackheads ... but sebaceous filaments. I see this all the time in the treatment room. What’s the difference? Blackheads are made of dead skin cells and oil, they are dark black from being oxidized, and slightly raised, therefore bumpy when you feel it. Sebaceous filaments forms from an impact of only oil in the pore (no dead skin cells). They are a lighter grey in color, and more flush with the skin and appear in a uniform pattern. Exfoliating products can help minimize the appearance of both, but its best to make peace with sebaceous filaments as you can’t get rid of them completely! They will just fill right back up with oil!
